Lakeside Restaurant

Nestled just off Smithies Lane in the scenic town of Heckmondwike, the Lakeside Restaurant is the kind of place that feels like a hidden gem-but one locals keep coming back to. With its inviting lakeside setting and relaxed vibe, this spot blends the charm of a countryside retreat with the comfort of a well-loved local favourite. Whether you're popping in for a solo lunch or gathering the family for a Sunday carvery, Lakeside makes the experience feel effortlessly enjoyable.

The first thing that strikes you is the spacious layout and accessibility. From the wheelchair-accessible car park and entrance to the thoughtfully designed seating and restroom areas, the restaurant is clearly built to accommodate everyone with ease. Inside, the decor keeps things simple and comfortable-just what you’d want when the focus is on great food and good company. And if the weather’s kind, outdoor seating by the water offers a tranquil spot to enjoy your meal with views that definitely enhance the flavor.

Lakeside isn’t just about scenery-it’s about flavour-forward, generously portioned food. The Sunday Lunch Carvery is an obvious standout, drawing regulars for its home-style roasts and hearty sides. But it’s far from the only reason to visit. Their Giant Yorkshire Puddings are a comfort food dream, while dishes like the Grilled Sea Bass with Chorizo show off a more refined side of the kitchen’s creativity.

Craving something casual? The Burger and Chips from the BBQ hits the spot-chargrilled and stacked with flavour, often accompanied by crispy fries and a fresh touch from the salad bar. For seafood lovers, the Garlic and Tomato King Prawns are a must-try, packed with juicy richness and served with a satisfying hit of garlic that pairs beautifully with a glass of chilled white wine.

Speaking of drinks, Lakeside has a surprisingly extensive selection for a countryside restaurant. The beer list is worth exploring, especially if you're into craft brews. There’s also a solid wine list, a range of cocktails, and standout coffee and teas-ideal for those lazy mid-morning catchups or a peaceful solo escape with a slice of Chocolate Fudge Cake (which, by the way, is decadently rich and fudgy, everything you’d want from a classic dessert).

Vegetarians aren’t left behind either. The Homemade Veggie Tart with Asparagus Spears and Pesto is both vibrant and filling, a thoughtful alternative to the usual meat-heavy options. And lighter bites like the Prawn Cocktail or Jacket Potato with Tuna offer simple, satisfying options that work well for lunch or a quick snack.

The service here keeps things relaxed-friendly without being overbearing, and quick without making you feel rushed. It’s the kind of place where the staff remember your name if you’re a regular and happily offer recommendations if it’s your first time.

Overall, Lakeside Restaurant hits that sweet spot between comfort and quality. With its all-day offerings-from breakfasts to dinner, healthy options to indulgent treats-and a setting that invites you to linger, it's easy to see why it’s become a popular choice for both locals and visitors passing through Mirfield. Whether you're after a classic Fish and Chips, a plate of Chicken Bites N Chips for the little ones, or a leisurely Eton Mess to finish off the evening, this spot serves up something for everyone.

Visited whilst at the zoo where there is plentiful free parking and plenty to do. Really friendly staff and gorgeous food. It was buffet style today and very good value for money. Drinks were great, nice tables, clean loos. Couldn’t fault it at all.
